Ana-suromai objects were created as a celebration of femininity. As a reminder of the times when people believed that as much as the vagina has the gift of giving life, it also has the ability to take it. They clung to its power so much that when a severe storm approached, they would send women to the highest point in the neighborhood to roll up their skirts to appease the element. In Irish medieval churches, castles and on gateposts we can find Sheela at a gig.
